Abergavenny Petanque Club
Our History
Abergavenny Petanque Club was formed in 2002 and was initially based at the Auberge public house, where games were played in the car park.
However as our membership increased we found that we had outgrown it so the hunt was one for another site, following various meetings with the local Council it was agreed that the site we now have was acceptable to all.
Fund raising and grants were obtained and the new terrain was laid and opened on Sunday 19th June 2005. The then Mayor of Abergavenny Cllr. Ray Hill cut the ribbon with Cllr. Val Smith Chair of Monmouthshire County Council and Cllr, Alan Breeze vice Chair of Monmouthshire County Council.
Also in attendance were our then club President Peter Clark, Dan Murphy president of the Welsh Petanque Association and members of various Clubs from both Wales and England.
Since then we have had flood lighting installed.
The club hosted the Celtic Challenge, with international teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales, on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May 2007 which was a superb event and great success.
The club has also hosted a number of Welsh Petanque Association Competitions and we have also held social events with Abergavenny Twinning Associations, Abergavenny and Chickhowell Rotary Clubs.
In 2023 we upgraded the terrain with new gravel and in October 2024 we refurbished our Flood Lighting coverting them from Halide Lamps to LED's
